DARKNESS ON THE EDGE OF TOWN by Brian Keene
One morning the residents of Walden,Virginia, woke up to find that the rest of the world was gone. Just . . . gone. Surrounding their town was a wall of inky darkness, casting Walden into permanent night. Nothing can get in, no light, no people, not even electricity or radio or TV signals. And no one can get out. No one who dared to penetrate the mysterious barrier has ever been seen again. Only their screams were heard. But for some of the residents-turned-prisoners of Walden, even the fear of that unseen death can’t keep them from trying to escape this living purgatory.
SCISSORS by Ray Garton
Stuart will never forget the horrible thing Dr. Ferguson did to him when he was boy. The pain, the blood and the snip-snip of those glinting scissors will live in his nightmares for the rest of his life. But now Dr. Ferguson is back and not just in Stuart’s dreams. He’s very real. He’s determined to perform that same horrible procedure on Stuart’s young son. And his scissors are nice and sharp.

CZP News and Reviews Round-up (Feb. 4, 2010)
January 29th, 2010. The Tufts Daily ran an interview with Daniel A. Rabuzzi’s author of The Choir Boats, saying, “The book was published by ChiZine Publications and was named one of the top ten books of 2009 for children by January Magazine, a literary Web site.” Rabuzzi himself says “that he is more interested in depicting love and romance than in warfare and calamity. ‘Family and romantic stuff, that’s most of what life is, not war,...Part of what I’m trying to do as an author is to try and unite those two [within fantasy.] I don’t think we’re fully whole until we wrap those two together.’”

You left out the fact that there are some great former Leisure authors in this group. Tom Piccirilli (check out his Leisure Westerns and his Leisure horror novel Hexes), Tim Waggoner (check out the brilliant Leisure novels Pandora Drive and Like Death), and J.F. Gonzalez (and of course check out the Leisure novel Survivor).

Hi, all, Here is a shameless plug to go nominate ChiZine Publications' books for the Locus Awards. You'd have to go to the "write-in" part to add them in. **** NOTE: in order for your vote to be counted, you MUST fill in the survey at the bottom. Another note--Locus asks you for your subscription number, but you don't need it; it's just that Locus subscribers' votes count for double. **** http://www.locusmag.com/Magazine/2010/Issue02_PollAndSurvey.html Here's what we have eligible: Monstrous Affections - David Nickle (short story collection) Objects of Worship - Claude Lalumière (short story collection) Horror Story and Other Horror Stories - Robert Boyczuk (short story collection) The World More Full of Weeping - Robert Wiersema (novella) The Tel Aviv Dossier - Lavie Tidhar & Nir Yaniv (fantasy novel) Filaria - Brent Hayward (SF novel, first novel) The Choir Boats - Daniel A. Rabuzzi (fantasy novel, YA book, first novel) You can also put in ChiZine Publications as the best publisher, and chizine.com as the best magazine. And Erik Mohr (our cover artist and book designer) for best artist! Thanks! Brett http://chizinepub.com

First off, congratulations to everyone who made it onto the Aurora Award shortlist!! We're particularly excited because our own Robert J. Wiersema is on there with his novella THE WORLD MORE FULL OF WEEPING, under "English short-form." That's CZP's first ever nomination!! You have until NOON on May 22 to vote online (Anyone who is a Canadian citizen or resident can vote): http://www.prix-aurora-awards.ca/English/home.htmHope you'll consider Rob's novella! And good luck to all the nominees. ++++ Amazing starred review for Brent Hayward's dystopian science fiction novel Filaria at Publishers Weekly.
Filaria Brent Hayward. ChiZine Publications (Diamond, dist.), $16.95 (240p) ISBN 9780980941012 Hayward's debut is a powerful, beautifully-written dystopian tale concerning four inhabitants of a gigantic but dying artificial habitat. Young Phister has lived his entire life on the radioactive lowest level, until he sets off in pursuit of a friend, and soon becomes lost among endless passageways. Ancient Mereziah, who's devoted his life to servicing the habitat's elevators, decides to hitch a ride on the outside of one of them, hoping to rise to the fabled top of the world before he dies. Tran so Phengh, a fisherman plying his trade on a polluted and retreating lake deep within the artificial world, leaves his dying wife and sets off on a quest to ask important questions of the Gods. Deidre, a pampered young girl who lives on the beautiful pastoral level at the top of the habitat, is wrenched away from her family by monstrous angels. Eventually, each learns some small part of the secret behind their claustrophobic artificial world and its impending collapse, though the tale ends abruptly, with no real resolution and little hope. With well-developed characters and four strong plotlines told through alternating chapters, Hayward delivers a fulfilling read. (Nov.)

Available this month from Leisure Books:
FRIDAY NIGHT IN BEAST HOUSE by Richard Laymon
The legendary Beast House, once home to unspeakable acts of agony and murder, is now a decrepit tourist attraction where the curious go for cheap thrills and daily tours. These days few actually believe the stories of slaughter and sexual torture are true, or that the beast really exists. But in the silence of the night, the cellar door of Beast House opens once again….
Mark and Alison snuck into Beast House after the tours were over for a midnight rendezvous. Mark hopes to get lucky but Alison seems more interested in the gruesome legends. But if the beast is only a legend, who's responsible for the mutilated carcass of a dog outside? And why is the padlock missing from the cellar door? Will this be the date of a lifetime or a date with death?
Also includes the bonus novella, The Wilds!
SNOW by Ronald Malfi
When a brutal snowstorm shut down all the flights in and out of Chicago, Todd Curry and a few others tranded passengers rented a Jeep to drive the rest of the way to their destinations. But along a forested, isolated road, they picked up a disoriented man wandering through the snow. His car wouldn't start and his daughter had vanished. Strangest of all were the mysterious slashes cut into the back of the man's coat, straight down to the flesh….
When they arrived in the nearest town it seemed deserted. Cars sat in the streets with their doors open.Fires burned unattended. But Todd and the rest of the travelers will soon learn the town is far from deserted, for they're being watched…and hunted. Soon they will discover the inhuman horrors that await them in the… SNOW

Douglas Smith got a glowing review in the March 15th edition of Library Journal:
Smith, Douglas. Chimerascope. ChiZine (http://chizine.com/chizinepub/). Mar. 2010. c.332p. ISBN 978-0-9812978-5-9. pap. $16.95. FANTASY From a bittersweet tale of love amid the savagery of human galactic conquest ("Scream Angel") to a postapocalyptic story of a righteous gunman known only as the Dead Man ("Memories of the Dead Man"), the 16 stories in this collection showcase the inventive mind and immense storytelling talent of one of Canada's most original writers of speculative fiction. Covering the spectrum from sf ("Enlightenment") to horror ("By Her Hand, She Draws You Down") to fantasy ("The Boys Are Back in Town"), Smith writes with a keen eye for detail and atmosphere, crafting each story with wit and perception. VERDICT Twice winner of Canada's Aurora Award, Smith writes stories that will appeal to fans of such literary sf writers such as Jack Vance and Gene Wolfe.

Simon Logan got a very solid review for Katja from the Punk Band in Publishers Weekly: Katja from the Punk Band Simon Logan. ChiZine (Diamond, dist.), $16.95 paper (280p) ISBN 978-0-9812978-7-3 This grungy, industrial novel is set during a dark, rainy night on an island where out-of-control industry routinely chews people into pulp. Having stolen a vial that supposedly contains a potent new drug from her sometime boyfriend, Katja hopes to barter it for passage to the mainland. Her plans lead to tenuous alliances with several equally desperate island dwellers, including junkies, drug lords, and corrupt parole officers, who cling to the belief that something—video games, drugs, self-mutilation, love, or just getting off the island—will set them free. Logan (Pretty Little Things to Fill Up the Void) maneuvers a large cast through overlapping sections of the plot, setting up characters separately and then slamming them into violent confrontations. Readers who can tolerate the deliberately unpleasant action will appreciate the skill with which it's presented. (May)

Here are the covers of five of the six fall titles from ChiZine Publications. (The only one missing is Halli Villegas's The Hair Wreath and Other Stories, which will be coming next week.)
The inimitable Erik Mohr did all the covers again. Only very minor font and image tweaks will be made to these.
Keep an eye out for them in stores beginning in August!
