Fragments

I just finished reading Red, by Jack Ketchum. I wondered, through a lot of the book, why it was acceptable to use run on sentences and fragments. One sentence would stretch the length of a paragraph and it continued forever usually broken up by the word "and" about three to five times throughout. I'm not an expert on writing, but do know when it is useful to use fragments in fiction or not. I was also disheartened to see the 'single quote' being used for dialogue. I'm not sure if I'm being picky or just discouraged to see such a praised author (by the likes of King and Little) not writing with a little more punch. Is there anyone out there brave enough to explain the reason behind this writing? I would greatly appreciate it. I do know that Ketchum has good connections, Bloch, but that shouldn't mean a thing as far as writing correctly is concerned. Thanks for any feedback.

Sincerely,

Jim Falcon

Forum: Writers

I've been looking for the E-book Dark Ones by Bryan Smith. I grudgingly finally switched over to a kindle so I can read some of my favorite authors and now that they are supposed to be released on E-books I am having trouble finding them. Please let me know how I can go about finding it so I can buy it as your site here and you have also posted on Facebook that you have released Bryan Smith's new book as an E-book The Dark Ones. I, as well as others, would really like to buy this title. If it isn't released yet and won't be released until the future please let me/us know when so I can plan accordingly of when I should be on the lookout for it since it will no longer be sent directly to my door. Thanks for your help. I truly hope to hear from someone.

Dan

Forum: Horror

Response time question for Allison.

Allison, I saw your response to this question in another thread. I clipped it below for your convenience. While I fully understand your point, I did have a question regarding the length of what's read in a submission.

I assume that your group reads entire novels before making a decision, which contributes to the length of time it takes to respond (please correct that assumption if necessary).

With that said, do you think a tiered submission approach would work better to speed things up? By this I mean something like this:

Limit submissions to a few chapters (or a representative page count of say 10-15% of the total length). Then respond back much more quickly and request the full manuscript if desired. The assumption here is that the writer has demonstrated enough skill in the first 10% to warrant further review. If the material gets by the first gate it should be of high enough quality that the rest of the novel would not severely disappoint. This might help you more quickly get beyond material that's not ready and at least let those authors know inside of a year. And if you do request the full manuscript, that should tell the author there is a very strong interest already, otherwise you would have passed on the smaller piece.

I realize this is not a new concept, but I have to wonder how often a novel improves so much after 5 chapters that if you hadn't read beyond that point the first time you would have mistakenly passed on it.

The numbers above a just representative, maybe another % is better, but the idea is to still wade more quickly through submissions to get to the gems faster.

Thanks
Bill

Hello Virdie,
I think your question is a common one and one that many people will be interested in the knowing answer. It may be eight months or more before you recieve a response to a submission. This is our standard time frame, no matter who is submitting, agent or author. Due to the sheer volume of submissions we receive, it sometimes takes longer than we'd all like for a decision to be made. But, we believe this to be preferable over reading fewer pages of every submission to speed up the time of response. Thank you for being a voice on the forums and I appreciate your patience in regards to submissions. I hope I've been able to answer your questions.
Forum: Writers
